Clark County Champions Food Waste Prevention with Official Proclamation

Clark County is taking a bold step in tackling one of the most pressing environmental and social issues of our time: food waste. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Clark County Food System Council, the Clark County Council has officially proclaimed April 7–13, 2025, as Food Waste Prevention Week. This marks a significant milestone in the county’s commitment to sustainability, food security, and community well-being.

Why Food Waste Prevention Matters

Each year, billions of pounds of food are wasted globally. This isn’t just a waste of resources—it’s a missed opportunity to nourish communities and protect our planet. When food is wasted, all the resources that went into producing, processing, and transporting it are wasted too. Meanwhile, decomposing food in landfills generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

Preventing food waste isn’t just good for the environment; it’s also an important step in addressing food insecurity. In Clark County and beyond, many families face hunger, yet perfectly good food often ends up in the trash. By reducing waste, we can redirect edible food to those who need it - and save households money.

Food Waste Prevention Week: A Nationwide Initiative

Food Waste Prevention Week is an international campaign aimed at educating people about the impact of food waste and inspiring solutions. It brings together government agencies, non-profits, businesses, and individuals to share tips, host events, and raise awareness.

The Clark County Food System Council worked to secure the county’s official proclamation, ensuring that our community will be part of this important movement. The week will highlight practical steps residents can take, such as meal planning and shopping, proper food storage, composting, and supporting local food recovery programs.

Clark County Council’s Commitment

The Clark County Council’s endorsement of Food Waste Prevention Week underscores their commitment to sustainability and innovation. Their support sends a strong message that reducing food waste is a priority for our community. The proclamation reflects the council’s understanding that food waste is a multifaceted issue that impacts the environment, economy, and public health.

Join the Movement: April 7–13, 2025

During Food Waste Prevention Week, Clark County residents will have the chance to engage in educational events, workshops, and initiatives aimed at reducing food waste. It’s an opportunity to learn, take action, and celebrate the positive change we can create together.
